Description

North Woodloes Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 18th century, likely incorporating elements of an earlier 17th-century building. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar, with the first floor of the rear ranges being red brick in Flemish bond, and the east gable end of the front range rendered. The roof is covered in plain tiles with gabled ends, and there are axial, gable end, and lateral brick stacks.

The farmhouse has a two-room plan for the front range, with a central stair hall, a large room parallel to the left end, and a long wing behind the right end. The front range was originally likely a three-room plan. The parallel back range contained a hall-kitchen with a rear lateral stack, and the rear wing served as a service wing with a back kitchen.

The south front has three windows and a symmetrical appearance, excluding a doorway and window positioned to the right of centre. Late 19th or 20th-century wooden three-light mullion transom casements are present, with a two-light window on the first floor centrally. Ground floor windows have flat stone arches. A central doorway features a panelled and glazed door with a rectangular overlight. A plinth continues into the rear ranges. Similar windows are found at the rear, except for 18th-century mullion-transom casements with leaded panes on the east and west sides of the wing. Doorways are set into the back range and rear wing, under a pentice roof in the angle; the doorway to the back range has a fielded bottom panel and thick glazing bars above.

Inside, the room in the parallel back range has two chamfered cross-beams with cyma stops. Axial beams are in the two front rooms; the left-hand beam is boxed in, while the right-hand beam is chamfered with cyma stops, indicating a former partition between this room and the stair hall has been moved. There's an 18th-century staircase with a moulded handrail ramped up to a column newel, although the balusters are now boxed in. The rear wing has a chamfered axial beam with run-out stops and exposed, unchamfered joists. Many panelled doors are present, some with fielded panels. Most fireplaces have been blocked; however, a gable end fireplace in the rear wing retains a brick arch, and to its right are an oven and a smoking chamber or drying kiln, also with an arch. The roof over the front range is reportedly similar to that of the large barn at North Woodloes Farm.
