Description
The Cottage, located approximately 4 metres north of Pinley Abbey, is a house that likely served as a former guest house for the Priory. It dates back to the 14th century, with later alterations. The ground floor is constructed of 19th-century brick, featuring main posts of timber framing, while the first floor has small timber-framing with brick infill. The building has an old plain-tile roof and a stone internal stack at the rear center with four diagonally set brick flues.
This two-storey structure has a two and a half-bay range. A 19th-century plank door leads to a 19th-century addition on the right side. There is a three-light casement window on the ground floor to the left and a single-light casement on the first floor to the right. The left return showcases a queen-post roof truss at the gable end. At the rear, the ground floor is again of 19th-century brick, with small timber-framing and brick infill on the first floor. The rear features a three-light casement on the ground floor to the left, a two-light casement to the right, and a gabled dormer with a two-light casement on the left.
Inside, the cottage has open fireplaces on the ground floor, along with chamfered spine beams and joists. Historically, the Cistercian Priory of Pinley was founded by Henry I and dissolved by Henry VIII.
