Description
The Church of Saint Nicholas was rebuilt in the 18th century on the site of a medieval church. The steeple with a porch at the west end was reconstructed in 1748, possibly by Job Collins, and likely modified when the main body of the church was rebuilt between 1779 and 1780 in a mixed Perpendicular and Flamboyant style by Thomas Johnson of Warwick. The nave features wide high aisles that create a nearly square rectangle. A chancel was added in 1869-70 in the Decorated style by John Gibson. This church is an important landmark in the old town, accessible from Castle Bridge. Inside, there are two carved wall monuments in the porch dating from 1656, a west gallery, a brass from 1424, and a carved monument from 1734 adorned with putti and cherubim.
