Description
St John's House is a Grade I listed building located on the south side of St John's in Warwick, dating from 1781. The current front of the house, which dates to around 1666, is recognized as a fine example of its period. The building is two storeys plus an attic and constructed from sandstone, featuring five bays. The central and end bays have identical geometrical gable heads, while the triangular gable heads between them are nearly all topped with intact finials, each bay containing a 2-light mullioned stone window.
A prominent two-storey projecting porch features a semi-circular-headed rusticated entrance, with a four-light transomed and mullioned window above. The end bays are adorned with wide, two-storey splayed bay windows that have ornamental carved balustrades made of pierced stonework typical of the era. Between these projecting bays are six-light stone windows of similar design, all fitted with leaded lights that include some old glass. The building has a half H plan with lower gabled back wings, topped with old tiled roofs.
Inside, notable features include original newel close string staircases, early chimneypieces, and late 17th-century panelling. The site may incorporate elements of the medieval Hospital of Saint John the Baptist, which was founded by Henry de Newburg, Earl of Warwick, during the reign of Henry II. Some exposed timber framework on the back elevation indicates that the front range was refaced and remodelled around 1666. The east back wing is dated 1626, marked with the initials AS, possibly for owner Anthony Stoughton, while the west back wing appears to have been built around 1666. St John's House, along with its entrance gateway and boundary walls, forms a cohesive group.
