Description

This is a terrace of eight houses, now used as shops with flats, offices and storage space above. The houses were built around 1822-1830, and have been altered later, including the addition of mid-20th century shop fronts to the ground floor. They are constructed of pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco frontages, and have Welsh slate roofs with cast-iron balconies.

The terrace is three storeys high, with 16 first-floor windows (two per house). The end two-window bays and the central four-window range project outwards. A continuous sill band runs across the first floor. The projecting sections have Doric pilasters from the first to the second floors, with a pair of pilasters located between the eighth and ninth, and between the ninth and tenth windows.

The first floor has 6/6 sash windows throughout. Windows 3, 4, 5, 6, 15 and 16 feature tooled and eared architraves, while the remainder have tooled, splayed surrounds, although these are missing from windows 1 and 2, and 13 and 14. Windows 7, 8, 9, 10, 16 and 17 have a frieze and pediment. Windows 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15 and 16 incorporate a frieze and cornice.

The second floor has 3/6 sash windows with sills throughout, and windows 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15 and 16 have tooled architraves. All windows are set in plain reveals, and have a frieze, low parapet, and copings.

The ground floor mainly has part-glazed entrances, some with overlights, and glazed shop fronts. Tall stacks are present on the right end, and there are two sets of ridge stacks with cornices. A scroll motif is incorporated into the balconies of number 86 on the second floor.

The interior has not been inspected.

Warwick Street was laid out around 1822-1826.
