Description

Stoneleigh Bridge is a long, narrow medieval bridge that spans the River Sowe. It was widened on the south side in the early 19th century by John Rennie. The 19th-century work is constructed from red sandstone ashlar. The bridge features parapets with plain copings and rectangular piers at both ends, as well as a string band at road level. The early 19th-century section consists of eight elliptical arches, with the eastern three spanning the river and five flood water arches located on the western bank. The south side has half round cut waters, while the north side of the medieval portion has a triangular cut water.
