Description
The White Lion Public House is a building that dates back to the 17th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The front is primarily constructed of painted stretcher bond brick, while the rear wall is made of sandstone. The north-west gable features a timber frame, and there are brick rear wings. The roof is covered in plain tiles, with gabled ends and brick dentil eaves, and there are brick stacks at the gable ends.
The building has a two-room plan in the main range, although the partition between the two rooms has been removed. There is a rear wing from the late 19th century, which may have been a rebuilding and extension of an earlier wing. The structure is two stories tall with an attic and has an asymmetrical two-window front on the south-west side.
On the ground floor, there are two 20th-century canted bay windows and a doorway to the left of center, which features a 19th-century doorcase with chamfered pilasters and an entablature topped with a cornice canopy. The first floor has two 19th-century three-light casements and two gabled dormers with casements. To the left, there is a similar dormer on the first storey and attic wing, which has a 20th-century window and door on the ground floor. At the rear, there is a brick wing to the left with a lean-to outshut on the gable end and 20th-century single-storey extensions.
Inside, the partitions on the ground floor of the front range have been removed, revealing chamfered axial beams, with the beam at the left (north-west) end featuring broach steps. The first floor attic and the north-west range have not been inspected. Historical documents, including deeds and conveyances from 1662 to 1820, mention the establishment as the "White Lyon Inn" in a reference from 1764.
