Description

The Kenilworth War Memorial stands at the southern edge of Abbey Fields Park, which is a scheduled ancient monument. It is a tall, stone obelisk, square in plan, with a low pyramidal top. The obelisk rises from a two-stepped stone base, which in turn sits on a further two-tiered set of stone slabs; the upper tier is enclosed by a small black metal fence.

The south-facing side of the monument is ornamented with a carved stone lion’s head near the top, holding a decorative wreath in its mouth. Below this is a bronze plaque bearing the inscription “IN GRATEFUL/ MEMORY OF/ THOSE FROM/ KENILWORTH/ WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES/ IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919/ LEST WE FORGET.” Similar plaques on the east and west sides record the names of those who died in the First World War. The north-facing plaque commemorates those who fell in the Second World War (1939-1945), with names below, and also includes a single name from the Korean War.

The surrounding area is paved, with flowerbeds to the north, east, and west, and the paving itself is not of special interest.
