Description

Oaken's and Iffelen's Almshouses, located on Castle Hill, are two-storey almshouses with origins dating back to the 17th century, specifically dated 1696. The first five almshouses on the left side are constructed from 17th-century brickwork and feature a continuous stone hood mould at the first-floor level. Most of the original stone dressings around the windows have been replaced with 19th-century casements that have diamond-shaped lights. The plinth has been rebuilt using blue bricks, and the roof is covered with old tiles.

On the right side, almshouses 7 to 10 display an inscription in good lettering set within a bolection moulded panel, indicating that these almshouses were rebuilt after a fire in 1694. The brick walls here appear to be of 18th-century origin, with a stone plinth and simple casement windows. The doors are boarded, and the roof has been largely renewed with machine-made tiles that have shaped ends. Above, there is chevron timber framing with restored plaster infilling, and a single flush dormer in the attic features a four-light mullioned window with 19th-century leaded lights. The ground floor has been rebuilt in brickwork and includes a 19th-century boarded door and a mullioned window, while the roof is mainly covered with old tiles.
