Description

The sports pavilion, built in the 1960s, is located at King Edward VI Grammar School and was designed by Robert Harvey of Yorke, Harper and Harvey. The ground floor is constructed of plum brick in stretcher bond, while the first floor is a timber-framed pavilion with plate glass windows and a metal-clad roof with a central gutter. The building is two storeys high.

The front of the pavilion features man-made grassed banks on either side, with flights of stone steps leading to a stepped terrace. Central, glazed double doors provide access, flanked by three large plate glass windows. A cricket score booth projects slightly from the front and the south-east flank. A roof overhangs the front, creating a canopy and incorporating replaced roof-lights at the centre; fascia boards edge the roof. A clock face sits above the doors. The side elevations are similarly designed; the ground-floor brickwork is carefully laid with recessed horizontal mortar joints and vertically flush brickwork. A continuous band of ventilation openings for the changing rooms is marked by a repeating pattern of recessed and projecting brick headers and stretchers. The first floor utilizes rough, un-planed and creosoted recycled railway sleepers for the side walls. The roof slopes to the central gutter, and a wooden-clad water tank projects above the roof line. A projecting section of ground-floor brickwork is centered to the rear elevation, above which sits a balcony with a timber parapet.

The interior preserves the original layout at both levels. Ground-floor changing and shower rooms accommodate both the home team and visitors, retaining original tilework, metal gates, clothes racks, and teak benches. The first-floor pavilion is an open space, featuring a central service island containing lavatories, a kitchen, and service counters. The solid side walls are divided into seating booths with fixed benches. Many original fittings remain throughout the building.
