Description
The Baptist Church, dated 1859, is a red brick chapel with a stucco front, featuring a moulded string course, cornice, and parapet. It has a single cell plan and is two storeys high with a three-window range. The projecting centre includes a pediment, and the entrance has a six-panelled double-leaf door, flanked by Tuscan pilasters and blind round-headed windows. Above the doors is an entablature with a pediment. The first floor features tripartite windows, while the narrower bays on the left and right have four-paned sash windows on each floor. The return sides are plain brick with four tall round-arched windows that have glazing bars. The east wall displays a simplified Venetian type tripartite window and gable. Inside, there is a west gallery supported by two cast iron columns and two scroll brackets, with a panelled and balustraded front that is now boarded in. The ceiling has a moulded plaster cornice and a central rose with an anthemion design. The church retains its original pews and lectern. There is a low single-storey link to the Old Baptist Meeting House, which is listed under Meeting Lane.
