Description

Alveston Lodge is a house, partly dating to the early 16th century, with additions from the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is constructed of brick with timber framing, with some original timber framing visible at the rear. It has tile roofs and brick stacks. The house comprises a 19th-century front range parallel to an 18th-century rear range, and a two-window rear wing. The 3-window front range has a gabled cross wing on the right end, featuring decorative bargeboards and an ashlar panel with a shield. A Tudor-arched entrance is flanked by side lights and topped by a bracketed canopy. There is a rectangular bay window to the left and a canted bay window to the right, both with ashlar angle piers, cornices, parapets, and transomed casements. The first floor has a central oriel with a hipped roof over two Tudor-arched lights, which were being repaired/replaced in March 1991. Smaller gabled bay windows are located to the left and right, along with a window with a drip mould, all with two-light casements. A rear elevation features two gabled wings and a taller, longer wing to the right. Two stacks are present on the rear, and one to the return. The right return has a bay window, alongside an 18th-century two-window range and an earlier three-window range with leaded casements. The interior has not been inspected. It is reputed to have been the residence of William More, Prior of Worcester, from 1518 to 1535.
