Description

Barley Lodge is a house dating from the 17th century, with later alterations. The structure is timber-frame and painted brick, with plaster and a renewed tile roof topped by a brick ridge stack. It is arranged in an L-shape, with two storeys and a basement, originally featuring a two-window front. The ground floor has a brick basement and a timber-framed facade. The main entrance is on the right end, accessed by 20th-century brick steps with a plain iron rail, and features a gabled canopy and a 20th-century split door. A plank door with strap hinges provides access to the basement. Windows are primarily casements; the ground-floor window is of four lights, while the first-floor windows are of two and three lights, all with small panes. The right return exhibits segmental-headed windows with 20th-century casements, a short rear wing, and a single-storey wing with timber wall posts. The left return is rendered with pebbledash. The rear includes a catslide roofed outshut and a wing with a late 20th-century two-storey addition, including a jettied first floor and a gabled dormer. The house is situated on the village green.
