Description
The stables, approximately 150 metres south-east of Alscot Park, were built in 1753 and altered in the 20th century for James West. They are constructed of red brick with a hidden hipped roof and a cupola with a clock. The building has a double-depth plan.
The north front presents a symmetrical 9-window arrangement over two storeys. A brick plat band and plain stone-coped parapet run along the top. A group of three central segmental-headed carriage entrances feature triple key blocks and segmental overlights above paired plank doors, flanked by spur walls. To the left of centre is a symmetrical arrangement of a segmental-headed entrance with a key block above a stable door, flanked by windows with 6-paned pivoted lights, and a window with a rubbed brick flat arch and key block over a 6/6 sash at each end. The right side mirrors this, with an entrance inserted to the right of the carriage entrances. The first floor has segmental-headed windows with key blocks, and a square turret displays a painted clock face on two sides, bearing the initials “J W” and the date 1753. The turret has an octagonal drum with round arches, a modillioned cornice, and an ogival cupola with a finial and bell.
The south front has a raised plat band at the centre. Segmental-headed entrances are positioned at each end, with a deeper curve than the northern entrances, mostly with battened stable doors. A large blocked segmental-headed opening is centrally located, with two inserted entrances with hopper fanlights and pitching doors above. Flanking the blocked opening are ventilation patterns; the one to the left is over an entrance with a hopper fanlight and a high segmental-headed window with a 2-light small-paned casement to the right, while the one to the right is over an entrance with an overlight resembling a 3-light small-paned casement above a plain battened door. The right end showcases an entrance flanked by windows with rubbed brick flat arches and key blocks; the first floor features two windows with cambered arches, all with 6/6 horned sashes. A similar entrance and flanking windows are found to the left of the centre, with 20th-century casements. The left end has been altered, with timber lintels to the openings: an 8/8 horned sash is set in a blocked entrance, and a large casement replaces two blocked windows. The first floor contains three windows with small-paned casements. The ends have external brick stairs pierced by parabolic arches; the western stair has an inserted entrance beneath it and an altered entrance to the left, while the first floor has a segmental-headed entrance with an overlight and a smaller segmental-headed entrance on the left. The eastern end has a moulded key block to the arch, a first-floor entrance, and a small inserted window.
Internally, the ground floor is characterized by loose boxes at each end of the north side, and to the centre and right of the south side, opening off a passage. Timber partitions and doors are present, with some rebuilt partitions to the south side right end. The stables remain in use.
