Description

The causeway on the drive to the east of Alscot Park, along with the retaining walls of the Fish Pool, is a structure possibly built around 1750 by Thomas Woodward. It features ashlar stonework set against rock-faced masonry. The causeway, which includes balustrades, runs between two pools, with the western pool having ashlar retaining walls connected to the causeway.

On the west side, there is a central segmental-headed opening and a smaller opening to the left in the rock-faced retaining wall, topped with a roll moulding. The balustrade features ogee arches between square and octagonal piers with caps. The central panel has a ramped segmental head over a cartouche displaying the West arms, flanked by decorative drops of fruit and flowers. The ends of the causeway curve forward and slope down to the retaining wall and the rectangular pool, which also has a roll moulding and two outlets at the west end.

The balustrade on the east side mirrors the details of the west side and includes a central panel with the West crest on the cartouche and a motto beneath. This balustrade is longer, extending along the western edge of the upper pool and concluding with retaining walls. One of these walls on the north side is capped with a rectangular plinth that features a sculpture of a lion.
