Description

The Old House is a house that likely dates from the mid-17th century, with a date of 1665 inscribed on the doorway. It has undergone alterations and additions in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The building is constructed from coursed limestone and lias rubble, featuring contrasting limestone quoins on the right range. It has an old tile hipped roof and a brick ridge stack on the right range. The house has an irregular four-unit plan and stands two storeys tall, with two sets of two-window ranges.

The entrance is located in the right corner of the taller left range and features a 20th-century ribbed door set in a simple chamfered surround with the incised date. The windows include 18th and early 19th-century styles, with horizontal glazing bars. Each range has a three-light wood mullioned and transomed window beneath a brick segmental arch on the left ground floor. The left range also has 19th-century two-light casements with chamfered painted wood lintels, while the first floor features cross windows. The right range has three-light casements. A sundial with the initials FW is incised on the quoin on the left side. The rear of the building is irregular.

Inside, there are ceiling beams, and the room to the right has a large open fireplace with a stepped stop-chamfered cambered bressumer and a later, possibly 18th-century, moulded cornice. This room contains two cupboards with panelled doors and butterfly hinges, as well as a quarter turn staircase with winders. The room to the left features panelled shutters, and the first-floor room has a 17th-century two-plank door with a wooden latch.
