Description
The Ten Cottages are a pair of estate cottages built in 1848, likely designed by Edward Blore for Earl Spencer. They are constructed from ironstone ashlar with a moulded cornice, while the rear is made of red brick. The cottages feature a double-span roof with fish scale tiles on the front and slates on the rear, along with coped gable parapets and moulded kneelers. A central stone stack has 20th-century brick square shafts.
In the Tudor style, the cottages are two storeys high and have a two-window range with two shallow projecting gabled bays. The wood mullioned windows have painted iron lattices, consisting of three lights with a transom on the ground floor and two lights on the first floor, all adorned with hood moulds. The front and return side gables display shields featuring the Spencer crest and the date. The return sides include porches with coped gable parapets and kneelers.
The cottages also feature a chamfered Tudor arch in a straight head with sunk spandrels and hood mould, while the sides have chamfered lancets. Inside, there is a chamfered Tudor arch doorway with a ribbed door and two-light windows to the left. The openings throughout have chamfered designs with alternating block surrounds. The interiors have not been inspected.
