Description

The wash house located between numbers 3 and 4, The Ten Cottages, was built in 1848 and is likely designed by Edward Blore for Earl Spencer. It features an ironstone ashlar front with red brick on the sides and rear. The building has a slate roof with a coped gable parapet and kneelers, along with a brick ridge stack that has two 20th-century square shafts. Designed in a Tudor style, the wash house is a single storey with a one-window range on the front gable. The large three-light wood mullioned window has a central transom set in a chamfered opening, surrounded by an alternating block surround and a hood mould. The return sides have plank doors beneath brick segmental arches. There is a lower brick range at the rear. The interior has not been inspected. This building is included for its group value.
