Description
The Ten Cottages is a corner block of three estate cottages built in 1848, with late 19th-century additions to No. 1. It was probably designed by Edward Blore for Earl Spencer. The cottages are constructed of ironstone ashlar, with red brick at the rear, and feature fish scale tile roofs, with slate at the back. The roofs have coped gable parapets and kneelers, along with stone ridges and external stacks that have 20th-century square brick shafts. The building is arranged in an L-plan, with No. 1 located in the wing on the right return side, and is designed in the Tudor style.
The structure is two storeys high and has a three-window range. There are shallow projecting gabled bays on the left and right. The doorways on both sides are chamfered Tudor arches set in straight heads, with sunk spandrels and ribbed doors. The ground floor features wood mullioned windows with painted iron lattices and transoms, consisting of three lights and two lights in the centre, while the first-floor windows have two lights. All ground floor openings are chamfered and have hood moulds with alternating block surrounds. A central gabled half-dormer is present, and the gables display shields with the Spencer crest. No. 1 has a later porch that includes a coped gable parapet and kneelers, along with a chamfered Tudor arch doorway in a straight head with a hood mould. There is a one-bay addition to the right in a similar style, featuring two-light windows with horizontal glazing bars. The interiors have not been inspected.
