Description
Nos. 40-43 Waterside, including No. 7 Chapel Lane, is a terrace of five houses built between 1856 and 1857. The buildings are constructed of brick with buff headers and feature stucco dressings. They have a slate roof with three brick cross-axial stacks and an end stack, designed in the Georgian style. The terrace is two storeys high and has a seven-window range with plain eaves.
To the right of the centre, there are two entrances. One has a consoled cornice and an overlight above a two-tall-panel door (No. 42), with an inserted window featuring a four-pane sash to the right. There is a similar entrance toward the left end (No. 43). The round-headed entry for Nos. 40 and 41 is located toward the right end, featuring a stucco arch and a blind fanlight above a plank door, with a similar entry to the left of centre.
The windows have sills and wedge lintels over six-pane sashes. The ground floor includes two later 19th-century canted bay windows with casements, and a four-pane sash to the right of the entrance for Nos. 40 and 41. The first floor has a blind window at the left end. The left return to Chapel Lane has a similar three-window range, with an entrance that also features a consoled cornice, an overlight, and a two-tall-panel door. This terrace is included for its group value.
