Description
The Theatre Workshops, originally built as a lecture hall and scene dock for the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, date back to 1887 and were designed by A.S. Flower. The building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features a timber-framed gable with pebbledash infill, topped with a tiled roof. It has a right-angle plan and consists of two storeys and an attic, with a jettied gable supported by moulded brackets.
The main entrance is tall and segmental-pointed, adorned with ashlar mouldings and a hood, and features paired studded doors with strap hinges. To the left of this entrance is a smaller door with a 4-centred head and a similar design, above which is a datestone that reads "CFE 1887." The façade includes three tall windows with single chamfered transoms, four square lights beneath the jetty, and two three-light windows in the gable, with a two-light window positioned above.
The left return features a raking dormer with a window on the ground floor and a two-light window on the first floor, as well as a tall lateral stack. The rear of the building has a large wing to the right, creating an L-plan shape, with a half-hipped roof and varied fenestration that includes casement windows. This building is an interesting example of a purpose-built ancillary structure for a theatre, with the tall entrance designed specifically for the removal of scenery.
