Description

The Cottages, comprising numbers 1 and 2 (formerly known as Brunel Cottage), are a group of three houses, now reduced to two. The original section dates from the 17th century and was rebuilt in the 18th century on its front facade. A later range was added in the late 19th century, with subsequent restoration work throughout. The original range has a timber-frame structure with a painted brick facade, while the rest of the building is painted brick with mock timber framing and a renewed tile roof.

The cottages are one-and-a-half storeys high, with five upper-stage windows – three of which relate to the original 17th-century part. There are three plank doors, each with a hood over. The windows are 2- and 3-light casements with glazing bars. Windows to the left have elliptical arches above them, while those in the original section are hooded. Full dormer windows have casements similar to those on the upper floors. The building has two ridge stacks and one at the right end.

The interior of the original part of the building is believed to retain extensive timber framing.
