Description
East Lodge, which includes a gate, is a gate lodge to Umberslade Hall, built in the late 19th century, probably designed by W.H. Bidlake for the Muntz family. The building is constructed of stucco on buff brick and features parapeted lead roofs, reflecting a Late Classical style with a triumphal-arch plan.
The lodge is two storeys tall with an attic room in the center. On either side of the central arch, there are tall 6/12 sash windows that have moulded eared and shouldered architraves, with moulded ribbon and laurel leaf swags above. The building has a torus-moulded plinth and channel-jointed vermiculated quoins. A giant Roman Doric pilaster flanks the arch and supports a moulded entablature that wraps around the lodge, featuring a section of moulded parapet with volutes at either end.
The rear facade is similar to the front. Within the arch, there are two 6-panel doors on either side, each with tooled eared architraves and a pilaster between them. Above, there is a semi-circular vaulted soffit made of buff brick. On each return at the upper stage, there are two 6/6 sash windows with tooled eared and shouldered architraves and sills.
The interior is described as plain and simple. A notable feature is the fine wrought-iron gate on the south side of the arch, which includes dog-bars topped by a panel with a scroll motif and bars, along with a shaped crest surmounted by a swan.
