Description
The Pedagogue's House, part of King Edward VI Grammar School, is a significant building located on Church Street in Stratford-upon-Avon. Originally constructed around 1553 as a school house and master's residence for the Guild of The Holy Cross, it has undergone various alterations and was restored between 1892 and 1895. The structure features a timber frame with plaster and some brick infill, set on an ashlar plinth, and has a tiled roof with a brick end stack.
The building has a four-unit plan and consists of two storeys, with a central gabled stair wing. The wing has a brick ground floor on a brick and rubble plinth, which includes a blocked elliptical-headed opening to the left, along with two blocked openings on the left return. The entrance is located to the left of the wing. To the right of the wing, there are two ground-floor windows with four-light leaded casements, and a possibly blocked window to the left. The first floor features a three-light window to the left of the wing, a two-light window above the entrance to the right, and a blocked three-light window to the left. The wing also has a three-light window, all with leaded glazing. The close-studded framing includes a middle rail, and the right return displays ovolo-mullioned windows on each floor.
At the rear, there is a late 20th-century range attached. Inside, the first floor is open to the roof and features three tie beam and collar trusses, one of which has arch braces and another with infill. There is a large fireplace at the left end. This building is recognized as one of the earliest timber-framed school buildings in the country, with surviving building accounts.
