Description
No. 16 Church Street is a town house that has been converted into an office. It dates back to around 1600, with the front being rebuilt around 1768 and further alterations made around 1840, including changes to the entrance and parapet. The building features a timber frame with ashlar dressings on a roughcast front, a tile roof with a slate front pitch, and brick stacks at the rear.
It stands three storeys high with a symmetrical three-window arrangement. The central section projects slightly and is taller than the single-storey wings on either side. The top cornice is complemented by a crenellated parapet. The entrance has an ogee-headed design with side lights supported by triple shafts under an altered timber hood. Above the six-fielded-panel door is a fanlight with decorative glazing bars, and the windows feature paired ogee-headed lights in ashlar surrounds with 8-pane sashes, while the second floor has single lights with 6-pane sashes.
The left wing includes an entrance and a window with rubbed brick flat arches and keys, while the right wing has blocked windows. The returns are timber-framed with close studding, and there is a canted oriel with a hipped roof and leaded glazing. Two early rainwater heads are located to the right, along with a triangular-headed window featuring a 6-panel horned sash to the left. At the rear, there are two timber-framed wings with stacks, one of which has diagonal shafts, and a rainwater head dated 1768. Inside, there is a staircase that dates to around 1730.
