Description
The Old Vicarage, now the headmaster's house for King Edward VI Grammar School, was built in 1702 with later alterations and designed by Francis Smith. This Georgian-style building features a brick construction with a tiled roof and brick end stacks. It has a double-depth plan, two storeys with an attic, and a five-window range. A platt band runs over the ground floor, and there is a top cornice. The round-headed entrance, located to the left of center, includes a doorcase with panelled pilasters and a bracketed open pediment, along with a fanlight that has radial glazing bars above a six-fielded-panel door. The windows are topped with rubbed brick flat arches over cross-casements, most of which have leaded glazing. The left end of the building has a later canted bay window with a hipped slate roof, along with a smaller first-floor bay. The ground floor features 12:16:12-pane sashes, while the first floor has 4:16:4-pane sashes. The attic includes four irregularly spaced hipped dormers with two-light small-paned casements. The rear of the building has two gabled wings with stucco, and the narrow right end has a catslide roof with an end stack. The interior is noted for having some panelling and a staircase with turned balusters. The Old Vicarage is part of a group of buildings used by the King Edward VI Grammar School.
