Description

A terrace of three town houses, built in 1838 with a fourth house added between 1845 and 1846, and subsequently altered. The houses are constructed of brick with buff brick headers and stucco dressings, and have a slate roof with four brick stacks arranged in pairs along the ridge. Designed in a Georgian style, the terrace is two storeys high, with a four-window frontage. The wide eaves have a projecting soffit. The entrances feature moulded doorcases with cornices, and 6-fielded-panel doors with overlights. The entrances to numbers 2 and 3 are arranged symmetrically, flanking the windows. The windows have sills and rusticated wedge lintels over 12-pane sashes. The right-hand end of the terrace has a later roof, featuring a 20th-century parapet and a garage door. A segmental-headed window on the first floor has been altered with a 20th-century casement; it was originally partly blocked. The terrace was built as part of the development of the north side of Stratford, known as New Town, on land sold by the trustees of Tyler's Charity around 1840.
