Description
This monument, located approximately 50 meters southwest of The Stoneythorpe Hotel, was erected in the late 19th century. It is made of limestone set on a granite plinth, featuring a moulded base and cornice topped with an urn. The front of the monument is inscribed with text that reads: 'THIS STONE/MARKS THE SITE OF THE/DISPENSARY COTTAGE/USED FOR THE PURPOSES OF THE FIRST SELF SUPPORTING OR/PROVIDENT DISPENSARY/IN THE KINGDOM/ESTABLISHED HERE BY/MR. H.L. SMITH,/IN THE YEAR 1822/UPON THE PLAN AFTERWARDS/SUCCESSFULLY/ADOPTED AT/COVENTRY, NORTHAMPTON/AND MANY OTHER PLACES'. The monument commemorates the Dispensary, which was founded in a 17th or 18th century thatched cottage by Dr. Henry Lilley Smith, who also established the former Eye and Ear Infirmary, now The Stoneythorpe Hotel. The stone was erected in 1889 by Rev. William Smith, the son of the founder. It is included for its group value.
