Description

The Black Dog Public House, along with the adjacent property at Number 10 Market Hill and Number 1 Warwick Street, is likely from the 18th century, with alterations in the early 19th century. The building was probably originally brick, but is now rendered. It has a 20th-century tile roof and brick stacks. The layout consists of three main sections. The front facade is two storeys high with a three-window arrangement. There are 20th-century bay windows on the ground floor in the centre and to the right, with 12-pane sashes on the first floor. To the left, there are early 19th-century canted bay windows with tripartite sashes on both the ground and first floors. A 20th-century door with an overlight is on the left (Number 10), and a six-panelled door is on the right. Both doors have rendered pilaster surrounds. Behind the public house is an early 19th-century block with 12-pane sashes on both floors, and a six-panelled door. The original doorcase has been removed. The interior is noted as having exposed beams. The building is included on the list for its group value.
