Description
The left gate pier and attached wall, located approximately 150 meters southeast of numbers 1, 2, and 3 Humblebee Cottages, date back to the 17th century. The gate pier is constructed from limestone ashlar and stands about 2.5 meters high, featuring an elaborately moulded plinth and cornice, along with shaped sunk panels on each face. The walls are made of red brick in Flemish garden wall bond, topped with 19th-century terracotta coping. The wall also reaches a height of approximately 2.5 meters, tapering down to 2 meters at the front and left return side. Together with the right gate pier and attached wall, they create a large walled enclosure that measures around 35 meters square, which likely served as the original kitchen garden for Chesterton House, which was demolished in 1802.
