Description
Post Box Cottage, Rosary Cottage, and Victory Cottage are a row of three cottages located on the east side of Avon Dasset Road. Post Box Cottage, dating from the mid-18th century, is on the right, while Rosary and Victory Cottages were likely substantially rebuilt and all were reroofed in the late 19th century. The cottages are constructed from regularly coursed limestone and have tile roofs. Post Box Cottage features a gable parapet at the right end and has brick end and ridge stacks. Each cottage has a two-unit plan with separate roofs, positioned at different levels due to the hillside location. They are one storey and have attics; Rosary and Post Box Cottages have a single window range, while Victory Cottage has a two-window range. Each cottage includes a central doorway and two windows, with casements that mostly have leaded lights and painted wood lintels.
Rosary Cottage, on the left, has a two-light casement in a partially-blocked doorway, with the entrance now located at the rear. It features three-light casements. Victory Cottage, in the center, has a 20th-century plank door with a wood lintel, a three-light casement to the left, and a two-light 20th-century metal casement to the right. Post Box Cottage has a 20th-century part-glazed door and, to the left, an original leaded cross window under a continuous lintel. To the right, there is a horizontal sash window with glazing bars. All cottages have small rendered gabled roof dormers, and the return sides and rear exhibit irregular fenestration. The rear of Victory Cottage features twin gables.
Inside, Post Box Cottage has chamfered cross beams, an open fireplace with a heavy rough bressumer, and a bread oven.
