Description

The Limes is a house dated 1702, with alterations made in the late 19th century by Wood-Jones. It is constructed of regularly coursed ironstone and features a moulded eaves cornice. The tile roof has coped gable parapets with moulded kneelers, and there are ashlar ridge and end stacks. The building has a 3-unit baffle entry plan and stands two storeys high with an attic. It has a three-window range, with the entrance located between the second and third bays, featuring a hollow chamfered lintel and a plank door. There is an original stone canopy supported by shaped brackets, and a two-light window to the left. The windows are mostly three-light, with chamfered stone mullions throughout. A small single-light staircase window is located between the first and second bays. A moulded fielded datestone displays the initials HTM, accompanied by an elaborate but badly eroded cornice with a winged head. The rear of the house is largely similar, with a door that has a cambered stone arch. The interior has not been inspected. According to Wood-Jones, the moulded eaves cornice is "the earliest to be recorded" in the Banbury region.
