Description
The Church of St Michael is a church rebuilt in 1872, designed by Ewan Christian. It is constructed of regular coursed blue lias stone with limestone dressings, alternating quoins and moulded cornices. The tile roofs have ridge cresting and coped gable parapets with decorated cross finials, while the tower has a slate pyramid roof. The church comprises a chancel, nave, north aisle, vestry, west tower, and south porch, and is in the Gothic Revival style with reticulated tracery.
The chancel has a one-bay design with a 3-light east window. The nave has three bays. A buttress of two offsets is located between the chancel and nave and between the vestry and aisle. The south porch has a doorway of two chamfered orders. The church features small ogee east and west lancets, a south doorway inside of two chamfered orders, and a plank door. A 2-light straight-headed south-east window, a 4-light central window, and a 2-light window are also present on the south side. The vestry includes a 2-light east window and a shouldered north doorway. The north aisle has a 3-light north-east and a 2-light central window; the remaining windows are hidden by a late 20th-century parish room. A 3-light west window is located at the tower end.
The two-stage west tower has a string course, moulded cornice, and moulded parapet. The first stage is of two storeys and features a chamfered west doorway of two orders, a 2-light west window, and slit windows on all sides. A clock face is on the south side. The top stage has traceried 2-light bell openings and gargoyles. Hood moulds with lias outer arches are present throughout.
The interior is in a simple Early English style with plastered walls. The arches are of two orders throughout. The chancel has a segmental pointed arch to the organ chamber, and the chancel arch rests on colonnettes with fluted corbels. The arcade features round piers and moulded octagonal capitals, with responds having round capitals on corbels. Scissor braced roofs are present throughout, with collars in both the chancel and nave. Fittings include a reredos of marble, mosaic and encaustic tiles, a font, an early 20th-century Perpendicular style screen and attached pulpit. Stained glass in the east window and the central north aisle window is likely from the 1870s, while the chancel south window dates to 1882.
