Description
The Birdingbury War Memorial is a First World War memorial created by stonemason Thomas H Elliott and dedicated in 1921. It was altered after the Second World War to include the names of those who fell during that conflict.
Constructed from Upton Wood limestone on a concrete base, the memorial stands approximately 2.5 meters high. It features a cross with four arms that project in different directions, mounted on a tapering four-sided shaft that is set diagonally. This shaft rests on a three-stepped plinth, which is inscribed on all four sides with inlaid bronze lettering. Three sides of the plinth read: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN MEMORY OF / THOSE FROM THIS PARISH / WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1918," followed by the names of the Fallen, and concludes with "FOR KING AND COUNTRY." The rear face is inscribed with "1939 – 1945," followed by the names of those who died in the Second World War.
The plinth is supported by a wide, high square base, which features four elaborate cast-iron posts on stone bases, with a chain-link fence suspended between them.
