Description
Brook Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with 19th century and late 20th century alterations. It is timber framed with old brick infill, and the front is underbuilt with 19th century brick, while the right return side features coursed lias rubble. The wing has been largely rebuilt in Flemish bond red brick and includes a brick dentil cornice. The roofs are covered with 20th century tiles, and there are old brick ridge and 20th century brick lateral stacks. The building is arranged in an L-plan, with a cross wing on the right side facing the road. It has two storeys and an attic wing, with a one-window range. The 19th century two-light casements have glazing bars, and the structure includes jowled posts and large curved braces. The wing has a blocked doorway on the right and a three-light wood and iron casement with a glazing bar. Brick segmental arches are present, and the left return side displays a timber framed gable. The right return side features irregular fenestration, including a 20th century window inserted in a former doorway. At the rear, the front wall of the main range is faced in mid-20th century brick, with two-light casements. The wing has some exposed framing on the left, and a 20th century casement has been inserted in a blocked doorway and window. A 20th century half-glazed door has been added to the right, along with a late 20th century porch in the angle and a full-width open verandah. There are two dormers with two-light casements featuring glazing bars.
Inside, a room in the main range has chamfered cross beams and an open fireplace with two small cupboards. Another room also has cross beams and an open fireplace, along with exposed framing and jowled posts. The staircase includes an old enclosed straight flight and a 19th century quarter turn staircase. The first floor retains old floorboards. One room in the main range features a plank enclosure in the angle beside the stack, with rebates for planks or a gate, possibly indicating it was used as a grain store. Another room has an old moulded two-panelled door.
