Description

Shilton House is a house, said to date to 1824, located on Leicester Road. It is built of Flemish bond brick with slate roofs. The main roof has deep eaves and late 19th-century blue brick lateral stacks. The house follows a double-pile plan with lean-to wings.

The symmetrical central range is two storeys high and has three windows. The wings are single-storey with an attic and each contain one window. A flush six-panelled door with a decorative fanlight is set within a moulded rendered doorcase featuring inner and outer arches, Tuscan pilasters, and an entablature. The initials WM and IHM are visible in the brickwork to the left of the door. The sashes have rendered lintels. The wings each feature two brick round blank arches with fanlight windows and a stone course marking the springing point. The first floor of the right wing has casements with glazing bars and brick flat arches, comprised of two lights on the left and three lights on the right. The roof of the right wing slopes downwards.

Inside, a dog-leg staircase has a scrolled string, stick balusters, and a wreathed handrail. Moulded architraves and cornices are present throughout. The hall and other rooms feature moulded dado rails. A room at the rear on the left side of the house contains a grey marble fireplace with gadrooned and moulded details and corner roundels. A room to the right has a simpler white marble fireplace.
