Description
The Roman Catholic Church of St Marie, located on Dunchurch Road, was built between 1846 and 1847 by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin and was enlarged from 1864 to 1867 by Edward Welby Pugin. The church features a striking west steeple added in 1872 by B Whelan. Constructed of ashlar stone, it showcases Early English and Decorated architectural styles. The south aisle includes a saddle-backed west tower from the original construction, while the nave, north aisle, and chancel with apse were completed in the later expansion. Inside, there is a notable Hibbert brass located in the south aisle, along with a baptistery and the Hibbert and Wilberforce chantries. The church is part of a group that includes outbuildings at St Marie's Convent.
