Description

Astley Hall Farmhouse and attached farm buildings, likely constructed as a model farm range, date from around 1830 to 1840, with some alterations made in the late 19th century. The building is made of Flemish bond brick and features a dentil cornice. It has a slate shallow-hipped roof with brick stacks at the left end and ridge. The structure is L-shaped, with a former barn and stable located in the left wing at the rear. It stands two storeys tall and consists of four bays, with the front being nearly symmetrical.

The façade showcases giant blind arcading with a string course at the springing level. The third bay contains a nine-panelled door with a fanlight, surrounded by moulded panelled reveals and a painted wood doorcase featuring Tuscan pilasters and an open pediment. The wood cross windows, likely from the late 19th century, have glazing bars and are topped with brick cambered arches. The first and fourth bays have ground-floor windows that project slightly and are capped with stone copings. The right side of the building is irregular.

While the interior has not been inspected, there is a large blind basket arch between the house and the farm buildings, which includes a plank door and two-light casements to the left and above. There are narrow blind windows on either side of the arch, each with brick flat arches, and a casement has been inserted into the left window. The barn doorway features a basket arch and is partly blocked, with doors and a window added in the 20th century. Various small openings have also been inserted. The rear of the building facing the yard includes two stable doors and a blocked barn doorway, while the barn itself has a kingpost roof.
