Description
The Dairy Farmhouse is a house dating from the 15th century, originally designed as an open-hall. In the mid-17th century, a floor and stack were inserted. The structure is timber-framed with later brick infill and features a plain-tiled roof with a ridge stack that has been rebuilt above the ridge. The house has a three-bay lobby-entry plan that replaces the original open-hall layout and consists of one storey and an attic. On the front, there are two 20th-century gable dormers and two three-light 20th-century wood casements on either side of the lobby-entry doorway. A late 19th-century timbered gable porch is also present. At the west end, there is a parlour bay that is one storey and an attic, timber-framed, and plain-tiled, with a chimney stack on the north wall and one three-light 20th-century wood casement on the front. The exposed framing consists of small panels.
Inside, evidence of the original open-hall can be seen in the roof, with general smoke blackening on the trench purlin roof and the centre truss. While most of the common rafters have been replaced, some original rafters remain above the bay to the east. The mid-17th-century inserted stack features back-to-back inglenook hearths, and there is a splat baluster staircase along with stop-chamfered ceilings on the ground floor. The parlour bay displays substantial 16th-century framing, including a short king-post to the closed truss between the parlour and the open-hall. On the ground floor, this wall has an ogee-headed doorway, which is now concealed. A late 17th-century corner fireplace with the original mantel is located in the first-floor chamber of this wing.
