Description

Dunton Hall is a house dating from the late 17th century, constructed of red brick with a hipped plain tile roof and brick ridge stacks. The building is aligned north-west to south-east. The south-west front features three storeys, with the second floor having reduced proportions and a moulded brick eaves cornice. It has five bays with 12-pane glazing bar sash windows that have gauged brick heads and raised keystones; some windows are blind and painted to resemble glazing bar sashes. The central entrance has a six-panel door set within a 19th-century porch that has cast iron colonettes at the corners and a hipped roof.

The north-east front has three bays with 16-pane glazing bar sash windows, also with gauged brick heads and raised keystones, a casement window to the left on the ground floor, and a tall stair window in the centre. There is a 19th-century six-panel double leaf door in the centre with a rectangular overlight. To the left is a late 18th-century extension wing that includes one ogee-headed window with Gothic glazing bars and a doorway with a straight head. The north-west and south-east sides each have two bays.

Inside, there is a late 17th-century dogleg staircase featuring a closed string, turned balusters, and a panelled dado. Dunton Hall is noted to have been the home of Dr. Samuel Johnson's maternal grandparents, Cornelius and Anne Ford.
