Description
Barbers Farm Cottage is a cottage dating from the late 15th century, which has been altered and extended in the 19th century. The original timber-framing has been replaced by 19th-century brick walls, with a sandstone rubble plinth. The front wall has been painted to imitate timber-framing. The cottage features a plain-tiled roof with an end stack and stands two storeys high. There are three first-floor windows, including one small casement, and a doorway flanked by 20th-century windows.
Inside, the original cottage was built using cruck construction, and the south gable end truss remains exposed. The framing of this truss is closed and weathered on the south side, showcasing well-crafted carpentry with substantial scantling. The spurs, middle rail, and king-post rising from the collar to the ridge are visible, although access to the roof was not possible to inspect the jointing at the apex. There is a single tier of inclined through-purlins extending northwards, along with an inserted 17th-century partition wall and floor, which may indicate a former open-hall layout.
