Description

OVER WHITACRE HURLEY LANE SP29SE (North side) 3/135 Barbers Farm Cottage 22/07/80 - II Cottage. Late C15, altered and extended C19. C19 brick walls replacing the original timber-framing. Sandstone rubble plinth. The front wall has been painted in imitation of timber-framing. Plain-tiled roof with end stack. Two storeys. 3 first floor windows, including one small casement. Doorway with C20 window at either side. Interior: The original cottage was of cruck construction. The south gable end truss remains and is exposed internally. The framing of this truss is closed and is weathered on the south side. The framing is well carpentered and of substantial scantling. The spurs, middle rail and king-post rising from the collar to the ridge are visible but access to the roof was not possible so that the jointing at the apex was not inspected. Single tier of inclined through-purlins extending northwards. Inserted C17 partition wall and floor into possible former open-hall.
