Description
Castle Farmhouse is a house with early 17th century origins, but it was mainly constructed in 1797 and altered in the late 20th century. The building features a timber frame on sandstone rubble, with red brick used for the principal range, which is now rendered. It has a plain-tiled roof with end parapets and moulded brick eaves coving. There is an end stack and a ridge stack located at the junction of the main and rear ranges. The house is designed in an L-shape, with two storeys and an attic, and it includes three gable dormers. The front has three 20th-century wood casements set in segmental arches, and there is a band between the storeys. The original pedimented doorcase is made of red brick and features a doorway with an arched head. The door is a 20th-century addition with two glazed panels, and there are flanking canted bays. The rear range has a sandstone ground floor with timber framing on the first floor. Inside, there is a closed string staircase from 1797, which is open-well with three flights and a landing. The first flight and part of the landing have original column balusters, square newels, and a moulded rail. A dated brick can be found on the south side wall.
