Description

The Old House is a house dated 1593, which was remodeled with a north wing added in 1908. It is timber-framed, with the framing pattern outlined by applied boards and roughcast infill panels, topped with a plain tile roof and a brick ridge stack on the south wing. Originally, the house had a T-shaped plan, with the main block aligned east-west facing south and a rear kitchen wing. In 1908, the kitchen wing was converted into an entrance range, and the north wing was added, resulting in an H-shaped plan.

The west front features a two-storey entrance range with flanking gabled cross-wings, also two storeys high with an attic. The upper storeys of the wings are jettied, displaying close studding on the ground storey, herringbone pattern bracing on the first floor, and 's' bracing with geometrical patterns above. The roof has tie beam and double collar trusses with curved V-struts above the upper collar, along with fretted bargeboards and apex pendants. The windows are arranged in a 1:1:1 pattern, consisting of casements with mullions and transoms, and leaded lights. There is a central lean-to porch with a 20th-century door.

Inside, the Victoria County History records that the western room of the south wing has a moulded ceiling beam and a stone fireplace with moulded jambs and a four-centred head, as well as a carved panelled frieze and a moulded shelf. The eastern room features an open timber staircase, while the upper rooms contain chamfered beams and cambered collars in the roof trusses.
