Description
Chapel End Congregational Church is a Congregational chapel built in 1840, with a Sunday school added in 1853. It is constructed of English bond red brick with a stuccoed front and features a slate roof with gabled ends and a brick dentil eaves cornice. The building has a rectangular auditorium with an entrance at the south front located under the gallery. The gallery was extended on the east and west sides in 1853 when the large Sunday school was built across the north end, showcasing a classical style.
The exterior is a single storey with a three-bay south front that includes a large broken pediment featuring a roundel with a clock face, and giant rusticated pilasters with paterae on the capitals. The central round arch doorway has panelled double doors, a wreath in a semi-circular fanlight, paterae in the spandrels, and a shallow canopy on enriched consoles. Above the doorway is a moulded round-headed panel with a painted inscription. There are tall flanking windows with similarly moulded round-headed architraves and moulded cills, as well as three tall round-headed windows on either side, all of which have later frames. At the back, the large two-storey Sunday school built in 1853 features multi-pane windows with segmental arches and a later outshut on the north side.
Inside, the gallery extends on three sides supported by thin iron posts, with a panelled front. The side galleries added in 1853 have balusters set in the panels. There is a panelled dado and a rostrum with a Greek key motif and a tripartite panel above on the north end wall, which includes round arches, pilasters, and painted text. Two round arches flanking the panel provide access to the Sunday school from the side galleries. The interior also features benches with shaped ends and umbrella stands.
