Description

Alpha House is a house that was formerly a public house and club, dating back to 1612 according to deeds and later in the 18th century. It features a timber-framed structure with red brick infill and red brick elements. The roof is covered with blue and black plain tiles and has a ridge stack. The original layout includes a main range with a cross-wing that faces the road. The main range consists of one storey and an attic, with one dormer and a casement window, both added in the late 20th century. There is a doorway in the re-entrant angle, likely leading to a former cross-passage. The house was extended at the south end in the late 18th century, also in red brick, and features a plain-tiled roof. It has a cellar and two storeys, with two hung sash windows on the first floor and a canted bay window on the ground floor.

The cross-wing has two bays and is one storey with an attic, showing exposed framing on the side wall, with three panels high on each wall. It was extended at the rear in the late 17th century, also framed and later cased in red brick. The front was extended by one bay in the late 18th century, constructed in red brick with Flemish bond. The building includes a cellar and has two storeys and an attic. A segmental arch leads to a first-floor wood casement window from the 20th century, while a boarded door on the ground floor provides access to the cellar.

Inside, the main range shows exposed framing in one bay and features curved bracing to the through-purlin roof. The cross-wing also has a similar roof structure, with more intact wall framing and chamfered main beams.
