Description
The Church of St. Mary is a parish church located on Tamworth Road in Corley. It features a nave dating from the early and late 12th century, with a chancel from the early 13th century. The north aisle was rebuilt in the 14th to 15th centuries, and the church underwent restoration in 1893. The structure is built from coursed sandstone rubble and irregular coursed sandstone, topped with a plain-tiled roof that includes a louvred bell turret from 1893.
The church's plan consists of a nave with a north aisle and a chancel. The nave, which is early 12th century, has a restored west wall and part of the south wall. The west wall features a round window above three coupled round-headed windows from 1893. The south wall has two similar windows at the west end, also from 1893, while two other windows are early 12th century and restored. The south doorway, dating from the 12th century, has a round-headed arch with one hollow and one roll moulding on engaged shafts, which have moulded bases and spiral volutes on the capitals.
The chancel, dating around 1300, has north and south walls each with two windows of two lights featuring Y-tracery. At the north-east and south-east angles of the chancel are two-stage angle buttresses with gables. The north aisle, rebuilt in the 14th to 15th centuries, contains two-light, cinquefoil windows set in four-centred arches.
Inside, the aisleless early 12th century nave features rere arches of windows with roll moulding. The late 12th century north arcade consists of two bays with round-headed arches that are unmoulded, supported by piers with round capitals decorated with scallops and various leaf motifs. A large head carved on the easternmost respond is a later addition. The 19th century roof is boarded. The chancel arch, from the early 12th century, is a round-headed arch of two unmoulded orders, with the inner order resting on a respond with a square capital that has a splayed lower edge. There is a piscina with trefoil cusping at the head.
The font is circular on a stem, with the bowl inscribed with initials and the date 1661. In the north aisle, there is a wall monument from the early 18th century made of black marble with a white marble open pediment and a shield of arms above a white marble tablet.
