Description
Big House Farmhouse is a late 18th-century farmhouse located on the north side of Breach Oak Lane in Wood End. The building is constructed of red brick with varied bonding, predominantly in Flemish bond, and features a roof that is hipped at the front and gabled at the two rear ranges, covered with blue/black plain tiles and a dentil eaves cornice.
The farmhouse has a central ridge stack that has been rebuilt above the ridge and follows a double pile plan. It stands two storeys high with an attic. The south front, facing the garden, is framed by rusticated sandstone quoins and a sandstone plinth, divided by a sandstone band with moulded upper and lower edges. The first floor has two 20th-century cross-frame casements with three lights, which are set under segmental arches made of header bricks. The ground floor features similar fenestration.
The entry front is located in the west wall, which has a brick plinth and three wood casements, including one blocked window opening, all under segmental arches. The central doorway is adorned with a moulded wood architrave and a six-panel door with raised and fielded panels. The rear wall contains old leaded light casements and a doorway under a segmental arch, leading to a door with one and a half bead and quirk moulded leaves.
Inside, the farmhouse has a central hall plan and features a three-flight staircase with a closed string, turned balusters, and square newels. The roof includes reused beams.
