Description
The milestone located southwest of Little Green Head Farm is a mid-18th century stone marker, with an early 19th century cast iron name plate attached to its front. The dressed stone features a rounded top, and the plate is inscribed with "LEEK 7 CHEADLE 3." The lettering and border of the plate are highlighted in black, while the rest of the plate is painted white.
This milestone is believed to have been erected in the 1760s and is part of a series that marked the turnpike route from Wetley Rocks, through Cheadle and Tean, to Rochester. The name plate is thought to have been added in the 1820s, and by 1840, the stone was included in the consolidated Cheadle turnpike.
The milestone is designated as a Grade II listed structure due to its well-preserved condition, representing the expansion of the road network following the 1773 general Turnpike Act, which mandated the recording of mileage. It is one of several 18th century milestones with early 19th century plates that mark the turnpike between Wetley Rocks and Cheadle, and it holds group value with other milestones along this route.
