Description

The former stables, located about 40 meters north of Whitehough, date back to 1724. They are constructed from dressed and coursed stone, featuring large dressed stone quoins and coping on the gable ends. The building is currently roofless, with the west gable partially collapsed.

The stables have a rectangular two-cell plan, with the larger right-hand cell having a doorway at the front. The front doorway to the left cell has been blocked. The exterior is one storey with a loft, displaying a four-bay south front. This includes a three-light stone mullion window on the right, a small single-light window on the left, and two doorways in the center. The larger right-hand doorway has a substantial stone lintel with a recessed panel carved with the initials RM and the date 1724. The smaller left doorway has been converted into a window.

On the right-hand (east) gable, there is a three-light stone mullion window that has been blocked by an adjoining outbuilding. At the rear, there is a very small blocked opening with stone frames and a loft doorway to the right of center. Inside, most of the first-floor beams have collapsed, and there is a stone partition wall between the two rooms.

It is noted that Robert Mellor, whose initials are carved on the lintel, was a Quaker, and it is reputed that this building was once used as a chapel, as mentioned by Rev F Brighton in "The Tales of Ipstones" published in 1937.
