Description
A large house, dated 1673, and likely incorporating earlier fabric, with restoration and enlargement in the late 18th century. The building is constructed of coursed dressed and squared stone, featuring large quoins and raised cavetto strings at floor levels, stepped over the windows. It has a tiled roof with a crested ridge and verge parapets with ball finials. The stacks are twin- and triple-shafted, some circular. The original design comprised two parallel ranges.
The house is two storeys and has a gable-lit attic. The three-window entrance front has three flush gables. All windows are chamfered and mullioned. Labelled two-light windows are present in the attic, originally three-, four-, and three-light windows on the first floor, now with 19th-century four-light windows to the right. The ground floor window arrangement is 5:2:2:5, with the right-hand section being deeper and incorporating a transom. Two-light windows flank a late 19th-century single-storey gabled porch, featuring a Tudor arch over a boarded door and a low-relief coat-of-arms above.
The central gable bears two labelled plaques at attic floor level. The left plaque commemorates John Whitehall of Parkhall and his family, noting lineage to William Aston, and names children Elizabeth, Anne, James, and James. The right plaque bears the date 1673.
A set-back late 18th-century wing of two windows is located to the right, two storeys high, and includes a dormer to the upper floor. A further set-back late 18th-century wing is situated to the left. Additional mullioned windows are found within paired gables on the left, each with ranges of two-, three-, and four-light windows.
